The Artist: Joshua Hedlund OJAI, CA
Artist, Illustrator, designer, and avid biker Joshua Hedlund was a natural choice to create a bandana honoring the Ojai Valley. Not only does he spend most of his days in Ojai enjoying the trails and natural spaces OVLC works so hard to protect, but his work is almost as ubiquitous in Ojai as the orange-and-green OVLC signage. His amazing logo work can be seen on local business and charitable organizations across the area, on cover art for local musicians, and on an ever growing collection of eye-catching t-shirts, hats, and posters that can be spotted all over town. Josh's passion and reverence for the natural beauty of the Ojai Valley shines through in this stunning design. We could not be more proud to bring his design to life, to use it to support OVLC, and to see it worn around the special place we call home.
The Design: "Nurture Nature"
Nearly every day that we’re home in Ojai, you’re likely to find us hiking, walking, running, splashing, biking, or simply gazing in awe at a section of land managed by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC). Whether it’s the restored wetlands of the Meadows Preserve, the ocean vistas from the Valley View Preserve, or the gently babbling waters of the Ventura River Preserve, OVLC protects, restores, and manages some of the most stunning natural landscapes in all of Southern California. Since we moved to Ojai, we’ve been avid supporters of OVLC and the incredible work they do. So when they came to us wanting to work on a bandana together – we knew we had to make it special. That’s why we tapped local artist and fellow “daily-OVLC-lands-enjoyer” Joshua Hedlund to create a design that did justice to not only the beauty of the Ojai Valley, but also to the work OVLC does to keep it that way. With “Nurture Nature” – Josh was able to expertly weave in local flora and fauna with elements that pay homage to the mission of OVLC. Josh's iconic piece is one that locals and visitors alike can wear for years to come to show their support for preserving the landscape that makes this valley special.
The Charity: Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC)
The Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC) is a nonprofit, non-governmental, land protection organization supported by private donations. They work to protect the views, trails, water, and wildlife of the Ojai Valley for current and future generations to enjoy. In the Ojai Valley, the OVLC manages roughly 2,300 acres of open space including 27 miles of trails that we and our Ojai family + friends enjoy on an almost daily basis. The land managed by OVLC includes a stunning 4.5 mile stretch of the Ventura River, where many of the photos you'll see on our site were taken. In addition to trail and land maintenance, OVLC also guides hundreds of visitors, and hosts tens of thousands of school children, hikers, equestrians, and others each year.
BANDITS is proud to partner with Josh and OVLC in creating this iconic bandana for locals and visitors alike to wear their passion for our valley proudly. We’re honored to continue our support for this vital organization that works tirelessly to preserve the natural beauty of the valley we call home.
